After the distress in Bernicia, Hild relished the harmony of her Gododdin life. Her lord was equable, her homestead welcoming, her household friendly, and Wulfi was her delight. In the next two years he grew past her elbow, standing out with his fair skin and light hair, a throwback to her father, but always with Cerdic’s nose. The village boys took him fishing and taught him to swim, Eata showed him how to use a spear and took him hunting, Brigit’s boys helped him shoot a sling and skin a hare, and Gwylget gave him a whelp from the royal litter.

From her hawthorn tree on the cliff edge, Hild looked down on boats beating across the Firth to the blue hills. The monks encompassed Pictland in their pilgrimages. She came across Pictish merchants in the vill at the water’s edge. All was peace.

She remembered Aidan, driven by passion for this god who lived humbly as a mortal. She must look again at Ethelburga’s Gospel book.
